Dark Horse Coffee Roasters is located in Melbourne's CBD, in the heart of Australia's coffee capital. 

Our coffee

Dark Horse coffee is roasted daily in small batches, ensuring that we're shipping at peak freshness, ready for you to brew and enjoy. 

After the roasting process the coffee is left to rest then stored in airtight valve tins to mature before making its way to you. 

As well as our popular 'Kick start' house blend we offer a range of single origin coffee from the world's best coffee growing regions such as Colombia, Brazil, Costa Rica, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Kenya, Peru, El Salvador and others.

Our story

Dark Horse Coffee Roasters is a boutique family coffee roasting business owned and run in Melbourne by brothers Bill and Chris Spathis. 

The pair have been involved in coffee since the mid-70s in the family coffee lounge in Melbourne's CBD and then their own café businesses. 

In the early 90s the brothers went to Sydney where they established and ran Retro Café. The café was located next door to The State Theatre in Sydney's CBD and was a Sydney institution for about 15 years. 

Then in 2005 Bill and Chris returned to Melbourne and opened Decoy Café in Flinders Lane. After deciding to start roasting their own coffee, they moved to their larger premises at 303 Exhibition Street when they now roast on-site in small batches for use in the café and for sale to customers. 

"Customers enjoyed the coffee so much that we were selling it to them to brew at home. Dark Horse Coffee Roasters was born and the business has taken off. We're now supplying to customers, workplaces and other cafés and getting great feedback."
